You do not need a bathroom shelf full of products to look after your face. A useful men's skincare routine starts with a few jobs done consistently: remove the day's sweat and dirt, keep skin comfortable, and protect it from the sun.
Begin with gentle cleansing, a suitable moisturiser and daytime sun protection. Once those basics work, you can decide whether anything else is needed. Your age, job and skin type can change the details, but they do not require a complicated routine.
Morning and evening at a glance
- Morning: cleanse as your skin needs, moisturise, then use appropriate sunscreen and other sun protection.
- Evening: cleanse away sunscreen, sweat and daily grime, then moisturise.
- After exercise: cleanse gently when sweat and dirt need removing; avoid repeated harsh washing.
Pick a routine you can maintain on a workday. Keep products easy to reach and introduce one change at a time. If something makes your skin sting or become persistently red, simplify and review its suitability.

Step one: cleanse gently
Use lukewarm water and your fingertips rather than a hard scrub. Massage cleanser over the face, rinse thoroughly and pat dry. A squeaky, tight feeling is not the goal.
DEPOT No. 801 Daily Skin Cleanser is an activated-charcoal facial cleansing gel. It is a relevant option when you want to remove everyday impurities and excess oil. Massage onto damp skin and rinse thoroughly, following the pack directions.
If your skin is particularly dry, reactive or affected by a diagnosed condition, choose a cleanser according to that need rather than assuming a men's label guarantees suitability. Fragrance and other ingredients can matter to sensitive skin.
Our existing guide to the importance of washing your face explains the cleansing step in more detail. Here, the aim is to put that step into a complete daily routine.
Step two: moisturise for comfort
Moisturiser helps skin retain moisture and feel less rough or tight. Apply an even amount rather than a thick layer by default, including the neck. Choose a texture you are comfortable wearing.
DEPOT No. 803 Daily Face Moisturiser is intended for daily hydration with a non-greasy finish. DEPOT directs application to cleansed face and neck, massaging until absorbed. It suits a straightforward routine when your skin needs everyday softness and comfort.
Oily-looking skin can still need moisture. If a product feels heavy, adjust the amount or choose a more suitable texture. Trying to remove every trace of oil with repeated washing can leave the skin uncomfortable.

Step three: make Australian sun protection routine
Sun protection deserves its own place in your morning routine, especially for outdoor work, sport or time on the road. A moisturiser without a stated, suitable SPF is not your sunscreen. Neither No. 803 nor No. 809 is recommended here as a replacement for sunscreen.
Cancer Council Australia advises outdoor workers to combine protective clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, shade, sunglasses and SPF50 or SPF50+ broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen. Follow current product directions for application and reapplication; sunscreen is one part of protection.
Apply enough to exposed skin, remembering commonly missed areas such as ears, neck and the back of the hands. Reapply at least every two hours outdoors and after swimming, sweating or towel drying, in line with the sunscreen label. An early application does not cover a whole outdoor shift.
If you wear a cap or helmet for work, consider the parts it leaves exposed and the sun-safe options compatible with your safety equipment. Seek shade where practical. Check the day's UV guidance rather than judging risk by how warm it feels.

What changes at night?
Evening is a sensible time to remove the day's sunscreen and grime. Then moisturise. You do not automatically need a separate night product if your current moisturiser keeps your skin comfortable.
When a richer evening option is useful, DEPOT No. 809 Nightly Face Moisturiser is formulated for overnight hydration with baobab-derived extract, hyaluronic acid and shea butter. Massage it into clean skin until absorbed, following the label.
Choose it for hydration rather than expecting a night cream to erase wrinkles or repair every effect of outdoor exposure. If you wake with comfortable skin and your routine is easy to maintain, you do not need to add another step just to make it look more advanced.
Adapt the basics to your skin and work
Dry or tight skin: keep washing gentle and review your moisturiser's texture. Very hot water and vigorous rubbing can make the routine less comfortable.
Oily or combination skin: cleanse consistently without repeatedly stripping the face. Use a moisturiser that feels suitable, and check the finish after it has settled.
Outdoor or dusty work: put sun protection first during the day and cleanse properly at night. Clean hands before applying skincare; do not rub products onto a face covered in grit.
After shaving: keep the routine gentle. If a product stings freshly shaved skin, review the formula and shaving technique. Persistent irritation or breakouts may need specific advice.
These are practical adjustments, not diagnoses. A pharmacist or healthcare professional can help when dryness, rash or acne remains troublesome.

Do you need exfoliation, serums or anti-ageing products?
Not all at once. Establish the basic routine first. Add a product to answer a clear need, and check how it works with anything you already use. Scrubbing harder is not a shortcut to smoother skin.
If you use prescribed skincare or treatment for acne, eczema or rosacea, follow that advice when choosing additional products. A simple compatible routine is more useful than several new products introduced together.
Common questions
What are the essentials in men's skincare?
Gentle cleansing, appropriate moisturising and daytime sun protection are a sensible foundation. Additional products depend on your skin and needs.
Do men over 40 need a different routine?
Review how your skin feels rather than following age alone. You may prefer a different moisturiser texture, while cleansing and sun protection remain useful basics.
Can I use face moisturiser instead of sunscreen?
Only a product with appropriate labelled sun protection can fill that role, used as directed. The DEPOT moisturisers featured here are not being presented as sunscreen.
Do I need a separate night cream?
No. It is an optional hydration choice. Use it if the texture and result suit your skin, not because every routine must have one.
