Why Washing Your Face Matters

Men's skincare does not need to be complicated. If you only build one habit, regularly cleansing your face is a sensible place to start.

During the day, oil, sweat, sunscreen, dirt and grooming products can build up on the skin. A facial cleanser helps remove that build-up without needing to scrub aggressively.

What is sebum?

Sebum is the natural oily substance produced by sebaceous glands in the skin. It is not something you need to strip away completely — it forms part of the skin's normal protective barrier.

The problem is balance. Excess oil, dead skin cells and other material can contribute to clogged pores in acne-prone skin, while cleansing too aggressively can leave the skin dry and irritated.

Why not just use body soap?

You can physically clean your face with many types of soap, but products designed for facial skin are generally formulated with the face in mind. Strong cleansers or repeated scrubbing can leave some men's skin feeling tight, dry or irritated.

If your face feels stripped or uncomfortable immediately after washing, that is not necessarily a sign that it is “extra clean”. It may mean your routine is too harsh.

How often should men wash their face?

There is no need to turn cleansing into a complicated schedule. For many men, washing the face in the morning and/or evening works well. Cleansing after heavy sweating can also be useful, particularly if you are prone to breakouts.

Your skin type matters. Someone with dry or sensitive skin may need a gentler approach than someone with very oily skin.

Does cold water close your pores?

No. Pores do not open and close like doors in response to hot and cold water. Lukewarm water is generally comfortable and effective for cleansing without unnecessarily irritating the skin.

Can washing prevent acne?

Regular cleansing can help remove oil, sweat and residue from the skin, but acne is more complicated than simply having a dirty face. Hormones, oil production, blocked follicles, inflammation and other factors can all be involved.

Washing harder or more often is therefore not automatically better. If acne is persistent, painful, causing scarring or not responding to basic skincare, speak with an appropriate health professional.

And no — not washing your face does not cause skin cancer

One claim in the original version of this article suggested blocked pores and breakouts could lead to skin cancer. That was incorrect.

Skin cancer risk is strongly associated with ultraviolet radiation exposure. Facial cleansing is useful skincare, but it is not a skin-cancer prevention strategy. Sun protection is the important conversation there.

A simple routine

You do not need ten products. A practical starting routine can be:

  • a gentle facial cleanser;
  • a moisturiser that suits your skin; and
  • appropriate broad-spectrum sun protection during the day.

Other products can be added when there is a reason for them rather than because a complicated routine looks impressive.
