Men's Guide to Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

Hair loss can be a small issue for one man and a major confidence issue for another. There is no “correct” way to feel about it — and there is no rule saying you have to treat it.

If you do want to change the appearance of thinning hair, scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is one option worth understanding properly before deciding.

What is scalp micropigmentation?

SMP is a cosmetic scalp-pigmentation technique. Tiny deposits of pigment are placed into the scalp to create the visual impression of very short hair follicles.

On a shaved or closely clipped scalp, this can create the appearance of a defined buzz-cut hairline. In areas where hair is thinning but still present, carefully placed pigment can reduce the contrast between the scalp and existing hair, creating the appearance of greater density.

SMP does not grow new hair and does not stop progressive hair loss. It changes what the scalp looks like.

Who considers SMP?

Men explore SMP for different reasons, including:

• a receding or changing hairline;
• male-pattern hair loss;
• visible scalp through thinning hair;
• crown thinning;
• creating a shaved-head appearance; and
• camouflaging some scalp scars, including certain transplant scars.

Some forms of alopecia may also be suitable for cosmetic camouflage, but unexplained, sudden or patchy hair loss should be medically assessed rather than simply covered.

Does SMP look like a tattoo?

Good SMP is designed to look like follicle impressions rather than conventional tattoo artwork. The equipment, pigment selection, dot size, placement and depth are chosen for the scalp and the visual result being created.

That does not mean SMP is invisible or guaranteed to look natural in every circumstance. Hairline design, pigment choice, skin characteristics, existing hair and practitioner technique all influence the result.

How many sessions are needed?

SMP is normally built gradually over multiple sessions rather than trying to create maximum density in one appointment. Layering allows the practitioner to assess how the pigment settles and refine the density and hairline.

The number of sessions varies according to the area being treated, existing hair, skin and the result you are trying to achieve. We explain the proposed treatment plan during consultation rather than promising the same number of sessions to everyone.

Is SMP permanent?

SMP is long-lasting, but the appearance can soften and fade over time. Sun exposure, skin characteristics, pigment, technique and individual lifestyle can all affect how it ages.

Future touch-ups may be wanted to refresh the appearance. For that reason, it is better to think of SMP as a long-term cosmetic treatment rather than something that will look exactly the same forever.

What about the hairline?

The hairline is one of the biggest decisions in SMP. A very low, sharp hairline may look appealing today but still needs to make sense as you age.

SMP or a hair system?

They solve different problems visually. SMP creates the appearance of follicles or density; it does not give you actual hair length. A hair system gives you hair that can be cut and styled, but requires ongoing attachment and maintenance.

Some men immediately know which look they prefer. Others need to see and understand both before deciding. Neither is automatically the better choice.
