Step 1 - Create Your Template

Getting the template right is the most important part. Do this once properly and every reattachment after is straightforward.

Method 1 - Glad Wrap and Tape
Lay glad wrap over your head and twist and tie the ends at the back like a bonnet so it sits flat against your scalp. Starting from the centre, run strips of tape front to back, then repeat side to side until the surface is covered and firm.

Method 2 - Template Replicator
Use a head template replicator with heading film for a more precise result. Available from most hair system suppliers.

Mapping Your Hairline (same for both methods)

Gently lift your eyebrows - this reveals where your natural hairline sits. While holding them up, mark your front hairline across the template. Mark the back line 1–2cm below where your thinning begins, and repeat on each side. Mark the centre point at both the front and back.

Remove the template from your head and connect the lines. Cut along the shape to create your template.

Cutting the System

Place the template onto the hair system and trace around it with a marker. Push all the hair firmly towards the crown before cutting so it stays clear of the blade. Cut along the traced line using a sharp craft knife - cut the PU only, not the lace.

Step 2 - Prepare Your Scalp

Shave or clip the hair within the template area, leaving a 2–3mm gap inside the line. Clean your scalp thoroughly with a scalp cleanser or alcohol wipe and allow to dry completely. No oils, no residue - a clean scalp is what holds the bond.

Step 3 - Apply Your Tape

Commander recommends Ultra Hold Tape for the best hold with the PU perimeter.

Apply strips of tape directly onto the PU perimeter of the system. Leave a 5mm gap from the outer edge and space each strip approximately 1cm apart. Do not apply tape to the lace - lace only bonds with adhesive, not tape.

Step 4 - Position the System

Align the front of the system with your marked hairline using the centre points as your guide. Peel only the front tape backing first. Once the front is positioned correctly, peel the remaining tape backing section by section, working towards the back.

Step 5 - Secure the Bond

Starting from the front centre, press firmly down and outward, working towards the sides and back. Apply slight tension as you press to ensure full adhesion with no air pockets or lifting edges.

Step 6 - Style

Blend, cut, and style as desired. For best results, have it cut and blended by a barber familiar with hair systems.

• Removal - Take the system off in the shower. Let warm water run over the front hairline for a minute to soften the bond. Starting from the front, slowly peel the system back - never pull from the back or force it. Take your time and let the water and warmth do the work.
• Cleanse - Do not use shampoo. Shampoo strips moisture from the hair and dries the system out over time. Instead, use a hydrating curl conditioner - it cleanses gently while keeping the hair soft and maintaining its natural texture.
• Condition - Work the conditioner through the hair from mid-length to tips. Do not apply to the base or knots.
• Dry - Pat dry gently with a towel. Allow to air dry where possible. Use a low heat setting if blow drying - keep heat away from the base.
• Oil - Apply a small drop of hair oil to your palms, rub together, and run lightly through the hair from scalp to tips. Do not apply directly to the base or PU perimeter.
• Swimming - Rinse thoroughly with fresh water immediately after swimming. Salt water and chlorine break down the bond and shorten system life.
• Sleeping - Use a silk pillowcase to reduce friction and extend the life of the system.
• Reattachment - Reattach and restyle every 7–14 days for best results.
• Avoid - Shampoo, bleaching the knots, excessive heat on the base, and oil-based products near the PU perimeter.

How long will Commander last?

With proper care, most systems last 3–6 months. Lifespan depends on how often you wash it, your activity level, and how consistently you maintain the bond and reattachment.

How often does it need reattaching?

Every 7–14 days. Remove the system, clean both your scalp and the PU perimeter, shave scalp, and reattach with fresh tape. The more consistently you do this, the better it looks and lasts.

Can I swim or train with it on?

Yes. The PU perimeter creates a firm bond. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water after swimming - salt water and chlorine break down the bond and shorten system life over time.

What tape do you recommend?

Ultra Hold Tape - available in our online store. It's the best match for Commander's PU perimeter and is what we use and recommend for all reattachments.

Do I wash it with shampoo?

No. Shampoo strips moisture from the hair and dries the system out over time. Use a hydrating curl conditioner instead - it cleanses gently while keeping the hair soft and maintaining its natural texture.

How do I choose the right colour?

Match your colour using the real hair images in the gallery below. If you're between two shades, go slightly darker - systems can look slightly darker once worn against your scalp but the system will fade a little. Still unsure? Book a video consultation with Core Benefits before ordering.

Can I cut and style it myself?

You can trim it yourself if you're experienced with hair systems. For best results, take it to a barber familiar with hair systems for blending and styling. Cutting incorrectly can affect how it sits and blends with your natural hair.

How do I remove it?

Is this the same as a toupee?
