The Psoas Muscle: What It Does and Where Massage Fits

The psoas is a deep muscle that gets talked about a lot in massage, fitness and mobility circles. You may have heard it described as the “fight or flight muscle”, the source of lower-back pain, or a muscle that stores stress and emotion.

The reality is less dramatic — and more useful.

What is the psoas?

The psoas major runs from the lumbar spine through the pelvis and joins the femur as part of the iliopsoas. It is involved in hip flexion and contributes to movement and control around the hip, pelvis and lower back.

You use it during everyday movements such as walking and climbing stairs, as well as running, lifting the leg and many sporting movements.

Is the psoas really the “fight or flight muscle”?

This is a popular description, but it should not be taken literally. Stress can change muscle tension and the way people hold or move their bodies, but there is not good evidence that emotional stress is uniquely stored in the psoas or that the psoas has a special role as a reservoir for trauma.

You can feel physically tight when you are stressed without needing a more complicated explanation.

Can a tight psoas cause lower-back pain?

The psoas can be relevant in some presentations of hip or lower-back discomfort, but back pain is rarely explained by one muscle alone. The spine, hips, surrounding muscles, training load, work demands, previous injury and many other factors can contribute.

That means it is too simplistic to say a tight psoas is the cause of someone's back pain — or that releasing it will eliminate the pain.

Where does massage fit?

Massage around the hip flexors, abdomen, pelvis and surrounding tissues may feel useful for some people who experience muscular tightness or restricted comfortable movement. It can form part of a broader sports massage or remedial massage session when appropriate.

Direct work around the psoas is not something every client needs, and harder or deeper is not automatically better. Because the muscle lies deep in the body near sensitive structures, treatment should be deliberate, explained and based on what the client is actually presenting with.

What about sporting performance?

A functioning hip-flexor system is obviously important for running and many athletic movements. What we cannot responsibly say is that regular psoas massage by itself creates superior athletic performance.

Massage may help with perceived soreness, tension or short-term flexibility for some people, while performance and recovery depend on much more — training, strength, mobility, sleep, nutrition and appropriate load management among them.

Do you need regular psoas massage?

No. There is no rule that every man needs his psoas released or massaged regularly.

If the area feels relevant to what you are experiencing, it can be assessed as part of the bigger picture. Sometimes focused work may be appropriate. Sometimes another area — or another type of care entirely — makes more sense.

At Core Benefits Toowoomba

My approach is not to chase one “problem muscle” because it is currently popular online. We start with what you are feeling, what you do for work or training, where movement feels restricted or uncomfortable, and what you want from the session.

From there, massage can be adapted rather than forcing every body through the same routine.
